Remote Desktop Connection
The remote desktop connection application allows you to connect to another persons pc provided that you are authorized to do so and provide a correct username and password. You can turn off remote desktop connections completely by right clicking on Computer and choosing properties, then choosing remote settings. Remote Desctop is useful for running tasks on a computer that could be located anywhere in the world without having to be there. You can therefore work on another pc and use that pcs resources without using up your own. The Remote Desktop Connection uses the RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) which Remote Assistance also uses and Terminal Services, so it is a secure protocol. You are able to view the desktop of the remote computer with remote desktop as well as connect to the drives and stream music from their pc to yours. you can move their mouse through the remote desktop window and type into various windows as if you were in front of their pc.
As you can see above, on the local network you can type in a computer name or select it from a list, you can also use this over the internet to connect with remote machines by their hostname or ip address. There are other options you can configure before you start a new connection and when you click on Options you will see the following window:
You have several options under different tabs including the option to save all the settings for that particular connection as a file or open an existing configurationg setting from a file. You can also choose display settings as well as local resources, programs and experience settings.
In order to allow or disallow remote desktop connections, you can go to control panel, then system and maintenance, then system and on the left pane you will see a link called remote settings, when you clcik that you will get the window show above called system properties and the remote tab has an option at the top to allow remote assistance connections to this computer, which is to allow you to get remote help through the remote desktop protocol. The options below are for the remote desktop connections and you have a few options, the first being the option for switching off remote desktop connections completely, where the next 2 are to allow it but one with a more secure connection than the other. You can also select specific users that can connect by selecting the Select Users button.
