Tablet PC Input Panel
The tablet PC input panel allows you to write in various applications with a stylus or pen on a touchscreen pc. You can use an autocomplete feature in the tablet PC Input panel that will auto complete e-mail addresses, URLs, file names and other items entered into the PC. There is also an input panel tab that allows the input panel to dock to the left or right of the screen and can be activated by either tapping on it or clicking on it.
This is the default look for the tablet pc in put panel. There are some buttons to the right that allows you to view a small on screen numeric keypad or a symbols keypad or a web keypad that contains buttons such as http:// or www. or .com or .org, etc that is very useful when using the web browser. You also have the main area for writing text into, which can be arranged as a grid, by clicking on the grid button (top left button in between the freesstyle and keyboard button). With the first option, you can write continuously and below your writing you will see the handwriting recognition, recognising your handwriting and giving you the option of converting it into text or selecting which word to convert your handwritten text to. If you have a word or notepad application open you can insert the text into the application as well.
The grid option has similar functionality as the previous one, except it converts one character at a time whilst you are writing something into the input panel. As you can see above, you can just write with your pen onto the application, except in the actual program, each letter would be converted to text, this example is just to show you the ability to write onto the panel in between the grid.
If you click on the menu bar, tools, you can see a menu with the option to Personalize Handwriting Recognition, this is shown below. You can also choose whether the input panel should be floating on top of other applications or whether it should dock to the top or bottom of the screen which gives the panel a section of the screen to occupy.
If you are having problems with the recognition of specific word or characters, you can select the first option that allows you to target specific recognition errors and will not take alot of setting up. If you are having general problems with the handwriting recognition feature, then the second option where you can teach the recognizer your hadnwriting style can be used to input more handwriting samples so the recognizer will be able to quickly work out your characters and words in the future. The example below shows the first option of targetting specific recognition errors:
If you are having constant errors with specific words and characters, you can specify them in the first option, Character or word you specify. If you are having problems with speific letters or numbers being recognized incorrectly such as 1 being recognized as I, then try the second option, Characters with similar shapes. We have chosen the first option seen below:
